VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES (+3)
Va Tech lost in a heart-breaker, 64-63, against South Carolina Upstate in their season opener and although this is the non-traditional early morning Tuesday game, I still don't think it gives them enough of an edge to cover. West Virginia looked pretty impressive in their opener, jumping out to 41 first-half points and shooting 56% from the field for the game overall, while holding MSM to a mere 40% from the field. These two schools played all the way down to the wire in their lone meeting last season, a game in which West Virginia outlasted Va Tech, 68-67, to escape with the win on their own home court. The Hokies should have a little revenge on their mind from that one and this season is expected to be a productive one as this Hokies team returns two of last season's top scorers. These two schools used to have quite the rivalry, but this will be the first time they have played each other since the 2004-05 school year, but they used to play closely contested meetings nearly every time. Including last season, Virginia Tech has now covered the spread in 5 straight games between the two teams and none of the last 4 meetings have been decided by more than 4 points. In fact, only 1 of the L10 meetings between the two schools has been decided by more than 4 points -- yes, that's right, 9 of the L10 meetings between the two schools have been decided by 4 points or less -- with 6 of those meetings decided by 3 points or less. That is an amazing rivalry and I expect this game to be very tightly contested throughout here today, despite the lackluster showing by the Hokies in game 1. Also, the underdog currently holds an 8-2 ATS record in those 10 meetings as well. The Mountaineers were also a horrible team to back when laying the points last season, as they went 1-3 ATS in their L4 games as the favorite and 3-8 ATS in the L11 in that situation. The Hokies were great when getting the points at the beginning of the season in 2012-13, as they were 2-0 ATS in their first 2 games as the underdog last season and 6-3 ATS in their first 9. They were a disappointment after that though, going 4-8 ATS when playing as the underdog during the rest of the season. Take the VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES to come through as the underdog in this tight battle......
NC STATE WOLFPACK (+7.5)
This one should come down to the wire, despite the fact that this Cincinnati team could finally be a serious contender once again. NC State is in a bit of turmoil after losing a few of last year's key stars from the roster, but they should have enough to keep this one within the near double-digit spread in the end. The Wolfpack came out blazing in their season opener against Appalachian State, scoring 98 points while shooting for 62% from the field and 45% from downtown. This game will technically be on a neutral court but is still being played in Cincinnati so it does give them a bit of a home court edge, but the Wolfpack was 5-3 ML and 4-4 ATS when playing on a neutral court last season. They did start out the season with 2 straight wins on a neutral court last season against UMASS and Penn State, and they are now 11-6 ML and 12-5 ATS over their L2 seasons on a neutral court overall. NC State has started out every season since 2008-09 with 3 straight wins as well, so they could end up stealing this one outright. Especially against this Bearcats team, that since last season has struggled mightily to cover any spread. Cincinnati did start off a with a win against North Carolina Central, 74-61, and they were horrendous for their backers in closing out 2012-13. The Bearcats were a dismal 1-8 ATS in their L9 games overall, and 2-10 ATS in their L12, and 6-17 ATS in their L23 contests. Not too mention, they were dreadful when playing as the favorite, posting a 9-14 ATS record in their L23 when laying the points. They were 4-0 ML and ATS on a neutral court during the regular season and 8-1 ML and ATS in their L9 games on a neutral court during the regular season since 2009-10. Still even despite getting the win, Cincinnati was only able to shoot for 39.2% from the field against far inferior competition in game 1, as they actually were out-shot by North Central Carolina, who hit for 39.5% from the field on the road. We'll take the points here and jump on the NC STATE WOLFPACK to get the early morning cover.......
