*3 UNITS* NORTHERN ILLINOIS HUSKIES (+10) AND OVER 120.5
Okay, I can't remember the last time we picked the Huskies in any other sport besides football, but today they do seem to present some decent value as the double-digit dogs here in Central Michigan today. For starters, Central Michigan can't really beat anyone lately, let alone by a double-digit spread. The Chippewas come into this one losers of two straight and gigantic losers overall lately as they have posted a pathetic 1-11 ML record in their L12 overall. Not too mention, they only have 4 wins since the start of December and 3 of those 4 wins have been decided by 4 points or less, with two of those wins decided by a mere 3-pointer. And in fact, out of all 27 games the Chippewas have actually played in so far this season, they would have posted a 2-23-2 record against today's double-digit spread. And Central Michigan has posted a 4-6 ML record on their home court this season, but only one of those wins came by more than 5 points as well, and that was about 6 weeks ago. Surprisingly the Chippewas have managed a 4-4 ATS record when listed as the favorite, although they have dropped each of their L3 games when laying the points. Central Michigan has had their difficulties on both sides of the ball lately as well, as they are hitting for less than 40% from the field and 27% from downtown over their L5 games, while also allowing their opponents a much higher 45% from the field and 43% from beyond the arc against them. Northern Illinois should never be anyone's choice to back on the hardwood, but they do come into this one playing well recently, as despite losing 4 straight overall and posting a paltry 1-10 ML record in their L11 (even worse 3-23 ML YTD) but they have kept it close recently, with each of their L2 losses coming by a mere 3 points or less, with both of those coming on the road as well. The Huskies have performed decently for their backers as the double-digit underdogs as well, as they have posted a 5-4 ATS record in their L9 overall when getting double-digit points. The Huskies have also been pretty bad on the defensive side of the ball lately, with opposing teams combining to hit for 45% from FG range and 40% from 3-point range in their L5 games. And Northern Illinois did get one of their 3 total wins this season against Central Michigan in their first meeting this season, picking up a 74-66 win on their home court a little over a month ago, and even though the Huskies have only posted a 2-3 ML record against the Chippewas in the L5 meetings, Central Michigan has not picked up a win by more than 6 points in any of those games in that span. Go with NORTHERN ILLINOIS and the OVER to come through for us here today..........
*2 UNITS* PITTSBURGH PANTHERS (+8.5)
I don't know if the books are just making this too easy this weekend, but this seems like a bit too high for a spread between these two teams, despite the recent struggles of the Panthers in general lately. Pittsburgh has truly had the most up and down season you can imagine and they come into this one once again in the midst of a 4-game skid, during which they have suffered two blowout losses in that span and only one came within today's spread. The Panthers also have been a productive bet for their backers when listed as the underdog this season, as they have posted a 3-1 ATS record in all 4 games listed as the underdog in 2011-12. They also have been a decent team to back when playing on the road, as although they are a measly 1-6 ML on the road during conference play, they are a slightly better 3-4 ATS in that span, with only one of their L5 losses in that stretch coming by more than today's spread. Louisville has played impressively themselves lately, but they haven't really shown that they can win against a spread as high as today's, as although they are 7-2 ML in their L9 games overall, they would have failed to cover today's spread in any of their L4. The Cardinals did also pick up an 11-point win at PITT in their first meeting this season, but these two schools have historically played tightly contested battles with 3 of their 4 prior meetings needed an extra OT period to be decided and 8 of their previous 9 meetings being decided by 6 points or less. Since Louisville entered into the Big East conference during the 2005-06 season, Pittsburgh is 3-2 ML in the 5 total games played at Louisville, with each of those 5 games decided by 7 points or less. 8.5 should be enough to pick up the casher here. Roll with the PITTSBURGH PANTHERS to COVER as the near double-digit underdogs in Kentucky today..........
CINCINNATI BEARCATS (+2.5) AND UNDER 119
It appears we may be going against the majority of public opinion here and although the Bulls are rolling lately and definitely in desperation mode to pick up a win here today, but still this spread still seems a little too high as this game very well should be a buzzer-beating type finish in all actuality. The Bearcats have found their rhythm lately, winning 3 straight and posting a 5-1 ML record in their L6 games, with their only loss in that span coming in blowout fashion at Marquette. Cincinnati has posted a 4-3 ML record on the road during conference play and although the Bearcats have dropped both of their L2 games when listed as the underdog, they are 4-2 ATS in their L6 games when getting the points. They have posted an even better 4-1 ATS record in their L5 games on the road as the underdog and they have done so by out-rebounding their opponents by nearly 10 boards a game and are keeping their opponents to a lowly 30% success rate from downtown over their L5 games. They have held 7 of their L8 opponents to 66 points or less, with 3 of their L5 failing to crack above 57 points in a game. On the flip side, South Florida is legitimately on the bubble's edge coming into this game and appears in nearly everyone's list as one of the first four "out" for the NCAA BB tournament. The only way they can salvage a berth would start with a huge win over Cincy on their home court here today. The Bulls are coming in off an 8-point loss at Syracuse in their last game, but they had won 4 in a row prior to that and do come into today's game with a productive 7-3 ML record in their L10 overall. The Bulls have also posted a perfect 5-0 ML record in their L5 games on their home court, since starting out Big East conference play with a loss to UCONN, 60-57, there. But the schedule will get considerably tougher for South Florida starting today, as they finish off the 2011-12 season with today's game against CIN, then they go to Louisville and close it out with a home game against West Virginia. And South Florida has posted a perfect 5-0 ATS record in their L5 games overall, although they are only 5-5 ATS on the season when listed as the favorite, although they are better on their home court, holding a 4-2 ATS record there as the fave. But this game should be low scoring and tight, but the Bulls might not have enough firepower to keep up with the Bearcats, as they have failed to score more than 65 points in any of their L6 games, being held to 56 or less in 4 of those games and 48 or less in 2 of them. They have struggled from the outside over their L5 games, hitting for a mere 28+% in that span from downtown. South Florida is 8-2 ATS in their L10 on their home court and they have gone a perfect 3-0 ML in the L3 meetings with Cincinnati on their home court. The Bulls have also owned the Bearcats in recent seasons as well, posting a damn near perfect 8-1 ATS record in the L9 meetings between the two schools. Still, the Bearcats should have too much for this Bulls team today. Go with CINCINNATI and the UNDER in today's match-up.......
INDIANA HOOSIERS (+2)
Another game that we are going against the grain here as the public has already bet this one up a half point on the spread. On first glance, I have to admit that we were leaning towards the Gophers, but the Gophers have already picked up the first win this season, beating the Hoosiers in Indiana, 77-74, in their first meeting this season. Indiana has played tough all season long and they have picked up some steam again lately, winning at a 4-1 clip in their L5 overall, with their only loss coming at Iowa as a -4 favorite in that span. Indiana has been a dismal 2-6 ML in their 8 road games during conference play and they have also dropped 3 straight playing at Williams Arena, but they are 5-3 when playing as the underdog all season long. But again, today just seems like one of those days. The Gophers on the other hand have dropped 4 straight and 5 of their L6 and have posted an 0-3 ML record in their L3 on their home court, with losses against the toughest of foes, Michigan State, Ohio State and Wisconsin in those 3 games. They have posted a 2-5 ML record in their 7 conference games inside the Barn, and they are an average 2-2 ATS in their 4 games listed as the favorite in Minnesota during Big Ten conference play. However if this turns into a score fest, the Gophers might not be able to keep up, as they have failed to crack 62 in 5 of their L8 games and have only gone for 70 one time in that span. The Hoosiers have been money on the road shooting the ball all season long, as they hit for 46% from the field and 44% from downtown when playing as the visiting team. Take the INDIANA HOOSIERS to pick up the upset here today........
