OVER 9 LA DODGERS @ ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (-110)
Alright so the Cardinals outlasted the Dodgers with last night's thrilling 3-2 win with a Furcal single in the bottom of the 12th inning and although the Cardinals should have a little momentum for today's game, Los Angeles should have a decided advantage in the pitching match-up and with the addition of Hanley Ramirez to the lineup, should have enough momentum of their own to pick up the victory and close out their series in St. Louis. For starters, Capuano has pretty much been average against the Cardinals in his career, posting a lifetime 5-5 record with an inflated 5.33 ERA in 15 career appearances (14 GS) against the storied franchise. But the lefty has been excellent all season long, so far compiling a 10-5 record and 2.81 ERA in 2012. He put together another quality start in his last outing against the Mets, allowing 3 ER in 7 innings of work, in the game the Dodgers won, 8-5, and snapped a personal 4-start winless streak in which he had also posted a 0-3 record. That stretch was merely a case of tough luck for him though, as he was in the midst of a 7-game stretch in which he had put forth 6 quality starts, and although he is merely 2-3 over his L8 starts, he holds a very respectable 2.79 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in that 50+ inning span. He has been even tougher during his day starts so far this season, as he holds a 5-3 record with a dominating 2.08 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and .222 BAA in his 9 starts and 60+ during the day. He faced the Cardinals once last season, and that was also at Busch Stadium, although in late September, and he was roughed up a bit, unable to make it out of the 5th inning and giving up 4 ER, 8 H and 2 HR, yet the Mets (his team in 2011) still won the game 8-6. In 2010 he was absolutely dominant against the Cardinals, as he gave up 1 R and 5 H against the Cardinals in 8 innings of work - 1 inning was in a relief appearance. Capuano has struggled mightily at Busch Stadium in his career though, posting a winless 0-3 record to go along with a ballooned 7.08 ERA, allowing 18 ER in 23+ IP and 5 appearances (4 starts) in the stadium. The runs should come early and often in this one, as Capuano is hit hard by the Cardinals regulars, with Beltran (2/7 2B, RBI, 4 BB, K); Berkman (8/22 3 2B, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 5 K); Holliday (8/23 2B, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 6 K); Furcal (8/22 2 2B, HR, 3 RBI, BB, 4 K); Craig (2/3 2B, HR, 2 RBI) and Freese (1/2 BB) combining to hit .367 against the lefty with 8 2B, 3 HR and 10 RBI in 79 career AB versus him. Westbrook was also hit hard by the Dodgers in his first start against them back in May, giving up 3 ER and 6 H in 6.1 IP in the 6-0 Dodgers victory, although that game was played in LA. He has also faced the Dodgers 2 other times in his career in 2 innings of relief appearances, and collectively he is 0-2 with a 6.48 ERA in the 8.1 total innings he has faced them in his career (including his start this season). Westbrook is coming in off a 2-start stretch at home in which he has allowed only 1 ER through 13.2 IP, but he had allowed 3 ER or more in his 6 previous starts at home prior to his L2 starts there, with 4 ER or more coming in 4 of those 6. As I said, the runs should be crossing the plate early and often in this one. Take the OVER in today's early morning affair.........
