OVER 7 COLORADO ROCKIES @ CHICAGO CUBS (-115)
Tough to go against the Cubs in their home confines of Wrigley Field with Jon Lester on the mound in a must-win game, but there's something about these Rockies when they face off against the Cubs in Chicago. The Rockies are 7-3 ML in their L10 games played at Wrigley since the 2015 season and hold a 13-7 ML record overall against the Cubs in that span. The Rockies have been abysmal in their last few jaunts at postseason play however, posting a pathetic 1-8 ML record in their L9 when it mattered. Lester is once again coming off a monster 18-6 season with a very respectable ERA (3.32) but quite a few of these Rockies hitters have had a lot of success against the big lefty in his career. Holliday is 7-for-15 against him lifetime with an OPS of 1.033, while Arenado, Blackmon and Desmond have combined to hit .355 (11-for-31) against him with 6 2B, 1 HR and 5 RBI. Those are some impressive numbers right in the heart of the order and after 8 innings of scoreless output by the offense yesterday, the Rockies finally came to life, albeit too late, in the 9th inning with back-to-back HR off Jansen. A long plane flight should have these guys fired up early on against the Cubs and wouldn't be surprised if they scratched out a couple of runs early in this game. Lester has never had much success against the Rockies franchise either, posting a 1-3 mark against Colorado over his 5 career starts against them, although he does carry a miniscule 2.25 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in those contests. And as dominant as it appears Lester is in postseason play, he only holds a 9-7 record through 24 G (20 GS) although one of those wins came in his lone playoff appearance against Colorado in which he tossed 5 IP of scoreless ball. Lester was dominant to close out the 2018 season though, as he tallied a 6-1 mark over his L9 games, to go along with an impressive 1.71 ERA. In fact, the southpaw allowed 1 R or less in 6 of those outings, with 5 of them being scoreless. Kyle Freeland has never pitched well against the Cubs himself and is 0-1 in only career start at Wrigley Field, but he has managed to keep Rizzo, Baez, Zobrist, Contreras and Schwarber to a career .045 BA (1-for-22) against him. Freeland was nothing short of amazing to close out the season, tossing 11 consecutive quality starts in the midst of an 8-0 run and 2.18 ERA. The Rockies closed out the season red hot with a 9-2 ML record in their L11 overall and they also posted a 12-2 ML record in the L14 starts Freeland made against teams with a winning record. The Rockies just seem to be like the hotter team with the hotter pitcher, while all of the pressure is going to be once again on the Cubs to get it done.
