OAKLAND A'S (-105)
The A's are rolling lately, as they have jumped out to a perfect 3-0 start to July, and have posted a 14-7 record since June 12 that was largely hurt by a 1-4 stretch to close out June against Texas and Seattle. And they haven't necessarily been doing that by scoring runs either, as they have been held to 3 R or less in 7 of their L9 games, posting a 4-3 record in those games. That has been largely thanks to the fact that the young A's rotation has managed to keep the opponent to a mere 2 R or less in 6 of their L10 games and to 4 R or less in 8 of their L10. The pitching staff has also been equally dominant at home lately, allowing 2 R or less in 6 of their L8 battles on their home turf and in 8 of their L10 match-ups there. Since June 6, the starting rotation has been absolutely nasty at Oakland Coliseum, as they have compiled a dominating 1.73 ERA in that span and they have a 2.02 ERA since May 27th there. Even better the starting pitcher for the A's has allowed 1 ER or less in 7 of their L9 games played at home, while the starters have also held the opposition to 2 R or less in 11 of their L12 in Oakland. That shouldn't bode too well for a Red Sox team that has failed to score more than 2 R in any of their L4 games and in 5 of their L6 overall. The Sox have scored a total of 12 R in the first 6 games of this 7-game road trip, and that is largely thanks to busting out for 5 runs against the Mariners in the 2nd game of the stretch. Other than that, they have scored 7 total runs in the other 5 games, so not quite sure where there run production will come from, is Griffin holds true for the A's starting rotation. Not 100% sold on the fact that the youngster can step up to the task, as this will be his 3rd major league start, but the kid has been good so far through his first 2 games, posting a 1.50 ERA and impressive 0.67 WHIP and .122 BAA, as he has allowed 2 ER, 5 H, 3 BB and struck out 8 in his 12 innings of work to his career. He was awesome at Texas in his last start, holding the vaunted Rangers offense to a mere 2 H, holding Kinsler, Hamilton, Beltre, Young, Cruz and Napoli to a combined 2-for-20 (.100) with 2 singles. Cook has also rebounded
in his L2 starts, coming off only his 3rd career shutout in his last start at Seattle. However, that hasn't necessarily proved to be a good thing for Cook in his follow-up start, as in his 2 previous follow-up starts to his CG shutouts, he has been rocked for an 0-2 record with an inflated 4.24 ERA, as he has allowed 5 R or more in both of those games. Even when he hasn't gone the distance in his career starts in which he doesn't allow a run, his follow-up game has most often been a disaster. Since 2004, in his follow-up starts to those games, he holds a hefty 5.63 ERA in those games. Gomes should be in line for a big day against him, as he has hit 7-for-14 against Cook lifetime, with a 2B, 3 HR and 6 RBI. The A's have also won 4 straight against the Red Sox and although they have only had 2 chances to sweep a team at home this season, they did pull off the 3-game sweep of the Dodgers in 1 of those opportunities. This Red Sox team is scuffling at the plate, much like those Dodgers were at that time. And with the A's pitching being so dominant lately, we'll go with the OAKLAND A'S to pick up the sweep on their home turf here today........
