SYRACUSE ORANGE (+16.5)
UNDER 71.5 LOUISVILLE CARDINALS @ SYRACUSE ORANGE
Okay, so let's get the elephant in the room out of the way first: these two teams have squared off 10 times in the last 10 school years and they have only managed to sniff a total close to this one on two occasions in that span, back in 2012 and 2007. Yes, Louisville just rolled off 70 points in their 56-point blowout win over Charlotte, but they should face a much stiffer test against this Syracuse defense that allowed only 143 yards of total offense (although it was against Colgate) last week and hasn't allowed Louisville to score more than 41 points in any of those L10 meetings. In fact, they haven't allowed this potent Louisville offense to score more than 28 points in any of their L5 meetings played in Syracuse to 28, 26, 21, 28 and 28 points in each of those contests. In fact, in the 7 lifetime meetings between the two schools played in the Carrier Dome, the Cardinals have only managed to score an even 30 points one time, and although they do hold a 3-4 ML record against Louisville at home, the Orange would have covered today's spread at a 6-1 clip. In recent meetings, this matchup has been all Louisville, as they are now 2-0 ML and ATS in the L2 meetings between the two schools, outscoring the Orange by an easy 69-23 margin in those games. The underdog has fared well in this matchup though, going 8-3 ATS in the L11 meetings, while Syracuse has also posted a perfect 4-0 ATS mark in their L4 overall, dating back to last season, and have dominated with a 5-0 ATS mark in their L5 games played at the Carrier Dome. The Under has cashed for an 11-1 mark in Louisville's L12 games following a blowout win the week before. Petrino is 5-0 ML against Syracuse in his career, but again, this game always seems to be played tight in New York. Go with the SYRACUSE ORANGE and the UNDER in this conference battle......
MARYLAND TERRAPINS (-11.5)
The Terps looked pretty good in their season opener against a much lesser Howard squad, while FIU went into the 4th quarter leading by a point over Indiana before being trounced 34-13 for a final. Although the Panthers do have an experienced squad this season led by a RB who gained 1300+ yards on the ground last season and a returning QB, the school itself has never fared well against either Maryland, or the Big Ten conference for that matter. Florida International enters tonight's contest having lost all 4 previous meetings against the Terrapins, with the last one coming in a 43-10 Maryland rout back in 2013. Maryland has won by double-digits in 3-of-those-4 meetings, while the Panthers also hold a perfectly imperfect 0-10 ML record against the Big Ten historically. FIU has played well at home in recent seasons, holding a 5-2 ML record there in their L7 games dating back to the 2014-15 school year, although they are 1-4 ATS in their L5 playing as a home underdog and a 2-5 ATS mark in their L7 in that same situation. They also have failed to cover in any of their L4 at home when getting double-digit points, while also holding a 1-6 ATS mark in their L7 as the home underdog of 10+ points. Maryland has been pretty bad on the road themselves lately, as they didn't pick up their first road win until their last road game of the season (46-41 win at Rutgers) and they were outscored by a combined 149-56 score in their 4 losses, although those losses did occur against the likes of Ohio State, Iowa, Michigan State and West Virginia. They haven't played as a favorite on the road since September 2014 at South Florida, a game in which they won by 7, but failed to cover the -11 spread at South Florida. Maryland has been a good team to back after an ATS loss the previous week as well in recent seasons, as they have responded with a 10-4 ATS mark in the following week of play. The Panthers are now 0-4 ATS in their L4 versus the Big Ten, while also holding an 0-4-1 ATS record in their L5 games overall. They also are 1-5 ATS in their L6 against a team with a winning record. Maryland is 1-12 ATS in their L13 following a straight up win the week before, but FIU has just never really played well at home during the month of September. Counting last week's loss against Indiana, on the FIU home turf since 2013-14, the Panthers have only managed to beat Wagner and NC Central and have had a 2-point loss to Bethune Cookman. Other than that, they have been beaten by 17 points or more in every other loss. This team piled up 519 yards of offense last week, while FIU was giving up just a shade under 500 yards on defense to a similar Hoosiers attack. Meanwhile, they only mustered 63 yards rushing against the Hoosiers D, while the Terps allowed a measly 69 against Howard's attack. Expecting an improvement for FIU there tonight, but if it's anywhere close to those numbers, we should be cashing easily. I agree it's a lot of points for this Terrapins team on the road, but we'll take our chances with the better team here. Roll with the MARYLAND TERRAPINS on the road tonight......
