TODAY'S FREEBIE PLAYS --
NEW YORK GIANTS (-3) AND UNDER 47.5
The Giants have a lot of potential heading into this first round game after easily dispatching the Cowboys in the last week of the season to secure their place in this year's postseason. The Giants should be as healthy as they can be heading into this one and we all know how deadly their defense can be when fully healthy. The Giants were playing much better towards the end of the season, finishing off the year winning 3 of their L4 games overall, and their defense was up to the task as well, allowing only 92 YPG on the ground over their L3 overall. Prior to their clutch season ending win against the Cowboys at Giants Stadium, they had lost 3 in a row on their home field. They finished 4-4 ML at home for 2011 overall and a disappointing 3-4-1 ATS as well. They did cover 4 out of their L5 ATS to end the regular season however, and were 1-0-1 ATS on the season when listed as a favorite of -3, but they were also 3-5-1 ATS when listed as the favorite on the season. The Falcons also finished off the season on a strong note, winning 3 of their L4, 5 of their L7 and posting an 8-3 ML record in their L11 games to close out the season. They lost 2 out of their L3 on the road, but they did post an average 4-4 ML record away from home this season overall, and were an even worse 3-5 ATS when out of their home element. They were 2-3 ATS overall and 1-2 ATS on the road when listed as the underdog this season. The offense did however explode for over 41 points in 2 of their L3 games, and they put up over 425+ YPG of total offense over those 3 games, but the 2 wins came on their home turf where Matty Ice and Co are money during his career. They struggled to get their running game going on the road this season, averaging 92 YPG away from home, and Turner could be key to any chance the Falcons will have today, and he has only rushed for more than 75 yards in 1 out of his L6 games. That game was against TB in the final game of the season however, and he rushed for 172 yards on the day. If he can't get it going the Giants will be forced to rely more heavily on Ryan and he has actually been slightly more productive away from home this season, as he averaged a 292 YPG average in the passing game on the road this season, but the Giants defense has been just as good in the secondary, allowing 218 YPG in the air against them over their L3 and 240+ YPG in the air at home. Manning and the passing game are money at home, as they go for less than a yard under 300 YPG in the air on average at home. The Giants pass rush has been rolling with 11 sacks and 2 FF in the L2 weeks to close out the season and they should be fully healthy for today's game. In his career, Ryan struggles on the road overall, posting a career 17-15 ML record with a lowly 58% completion rate and 46 TD against 29 INT. Those wouldn't be all that bad of numbers if he wasn't such a much different QB at home (26-4 ML / 65% / 49 TD 17 INT). He faced the Giants once before in NY in his career and was effective, throwing for 268 yards 2 TD and 0 INT in a 34-31 OT loss back in 2009. The Giants have won the L3 meetings between the two teams and have scored 27 points or more in each of those games, although the road team has a 9-1 ML record in the L10 meetings between them since 1988. Eli hasn't led his team to a playoff victory since that magical run in 2007, but with him once again having the opportunity to truly take over the main stage from his brother a little more, he should relish in the opportunity again today. The Giants are only 0-1 ML in their 1 playoff game since the year after that Super Bowl winning season, but they are 5-1 ATS in their L6 playoff games, although 4 of those were during that crazy season. But this one should end up with a 26-21 or 24-17 or 24-21 final in favor of the Giants today. Although it would seem like these two teams should play to the Over, going to have to say not so fast and roll with the bookies in this early match-up. Take the NEW YORK GIANTS to COVER the SPREAD as the home FG favorite and also roll with the UNDER in this one.......
OTTAWA SENATORS (+105)
The Senators gave Philadelphia all they could handle yesterday and lost with 6 seconds left in the OT period. However, they have been red hot at home as of late, posting a 6-1-0 record in their L7 at home. Also, the home team has gone 20-8-1 in L29 meetings between these two clubs, with the Flyers a dismal 6-20-5 in their L31 games played in Ottawa. Bryzgalov appeared in 5 games (4 GS) against Ottawa in his career and has given up 16 total goals in those games. In 280 minutes against them, he has given up a goal to the 17.5 minutes to the Senators. He has also struggled on the road recently, going 0-2-1 with a 3.61 GAA in his L3 away from home. His counterpart Anderson finished with 36 saves Saturday, and is 5-1-0 with a 2.12 goals-against average in his L6 on his home ice, and is also 5-2-1 with a 2.61 GAA against the Flyers in his career Captain Alfredsson has 6 G and 9 A in his L8 contests at Scotiabank Place. Ottawa hasn't lost 3 in a row to Philly since the 1997-98 season and we don't expect them to fall here today. The Flyers have also struggled on the road against teams with a winning record as they have posted a 3-7 ML record in their L10 in that situation and they have gone 1-4 ML in their L5 against the Eastern Conference. Roll with OTTAWA to pick up the bounce-back WIN on their home ice today........
